Gold Plus’ Golden Glory: Runner-Up, NVC 2009

On the night of April 8^th 2009, Room 204 of the Embassy Suites, Portland, was a complete mess. Papers were all over the place, pizza leftovers sat on the table, and empty cans of energy drinks lay on the floor. On top of that, the voices of four individuals could be heard – they were rehearsing their scripts to perfectness. Another one was putting the final touches on the powerpoint slides. The two advisors looked overly used and exhausted. Nevertheless, they were all determined to get it right.

It was 10 hours before our show. The show we’ve been working for the past year.

The Gold Plus team was formed the previous June. Project after project were trashed, and more than three months have passed before we finally settled with our special pre-alloyed gold grains. The invention of Dr. Boonrat Lohwongwattana, a CalTech PhD, Gold Plus’ technology reduces the density of 14K gold to produce jewelry with the same size and quality but 20% less cost. Days and nights were then spent building our case from the ground. In February, after our final class presentation and knowing we were coming to the New Venture Championship in Oregon, we were forced to take Gold Plus to the next level. Our project was peeled, killed, re-written, only to be torn apart again… Months of sleepless nights, endless discussions, and sneaking off to make phone calls in office hours were some of the price we paid to get here.

And on April 9^th – here we were, presenting in the NVC semi-final round. In the same division were teams from the University of Texas at Austin, Purdue University, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Only one would make it to the finals. That day, we were able to put on our best show ever with a confidence and entrepreneurial spirit that even we first saw in ourselves. Nothing could’ve been a better prove of success than the moment when our team’s name was announced later that evening in the Finalists announcement reception.

To ease the tension a bit that night, as has been tradition at the NVC for a couple of years now, we hosted Thai night – a social get-together for all teams to eat, drink, and converse. We slept well that night, waking up to D-Day.

Nothing we’ve ever experienced before was like the Finals. We were up against four of the best schools in front of investors worth millions of dollars. This was for real. That day, we once again showed the world our very best.

The NVC Results were as follow: Champion – Brigham Young University; First Runner-Up – Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University; Second Runner-Up – University of California, Berkeley; Runner-Ups – MIM Thammasat University and Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration.

So after dozens of new acquaintances (with professors, scientists, jewelry manufacturers, designers, etc.), close to two thousand emails, hundreds of Starbucks glasses, and countless hours of hard work, Gold Plus has come far beyond many’s expectations. What we’ve achieved was more than just a title, a plague, and a few grands to spend, but a set of skills and will-power that will last forever.

Thank you A. Bill and P’Mhom for being so much more than just advisors. We would never have come close to where we were without you. Thank you A. L and all faculty staff for all the advice and facilitations. Thank you MIM for allowing this experience of a lifetime.

ในคืนวันที่ 8 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2552 ณ ห้องพัก 204 โรงแรม Embassy Suites เมืองพอร์ตแลนต์ ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ได้กลายเป็นห้องรกเนื่องด้วย เอกสารต่างๆกระจัดกระจาย, อาหารที่ค้างเหลือถูกทิ้งไว้บนโต๊ะทำงานรวมไปถึง กระป๋องเครื่องดื่มชูกำลังที่กองรวมกันบนพื้น โดยมีเสียงของคนทั้งสี่ที่เปล่งสลับกันไปมาที่กำลังซักซ้อมการนำเสนอแผนธุรกิจให้ออกมาดีที่สุด และอีกหนึ่งที่ง่วนอยู่กับการประดิษฐ์ ตกแต่งสไลด์ให้ออกมาสวยงามเป็นครั้งสุดท้าย อาจารย์ที่ปรึกษาสองท่านที่อดนอนมาเป็นเวลานาน ดูจะเริ่มอ่อนล้า แต่อย่างไรก็ตามพวกเขาทั้งหมดยังคงตั้งมั่นที่จะทำทุกอย่างให้สำเร็จอย่างสมบูรณ์แบบ ซึ่งขณะนั้นเป็นเวลาสิบชั่วโมงก่อนการแข่งขันแผนธุรกิจที่ได้มีการเตรียมงานตั้งแต่ปีที่ผ่านมา

ทีมงานโกลด์พลัสได้ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อเดือนมิถุนายนปีที่ผ่านมา หลากหลายงานวิจัยที่ได้ถูกหยิบยก คัดเลือกขึ้นมาและตกไป มันเป็นเวลามากกว่าสามเดือนที่ทางทีมได้คัดเฟ้นงานวิจัย จนในที่สุดได้เลือก เม็ดทองผสมสำเร็จสูตรพิเศษ (pre-alloyed gold grains) ซึ่งเป็นงานวิจัยของท่าน ดร. บุญรัตน์ โล่ห์วงศ์วัฒนะ อาจารย์ประจำคณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย, ปริญญาเอกจาก California Institute of Technology ทั้งนี้เทคโนโลยีของโกลด์พลัส สามารถลดความหนาแน่นของทอง 14K ซึ่งใช้ในการผลิตเครื่องประดับ โดยยังคงขนาดเท่าเดิมแต่สามารถลดต้นทุนได้ถึง 20% กว่าจะเป็นแผนธุรกิจนี้ การสร้างแผนธุรกิจตั้งแต่แรกเริ่มต้องใช้ระยะเวลายาวนาน

เมื่อเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ที่ผ่านมา ทีมโกลด์พลัสได้รับการคัดเลือกให้เป็นตัวแทนของมหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ เพื่อร่วมการแข่งขัน New Venture championship ณ มลรัฐโอเรกอน ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา หลังจากเสร็จสิ้นการนำเสนอแผนธุรกิจครั้งสุดท้ายในวิชา Project Work พวกเราทีมงานโกลด์พลัสได้ถูกผลักดันให้พัฒนาแผนธุรกิจไปอีกขั้น โดยผ่านการแก้ไข และปรับปรุงงานเขียนแผนซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่า...ซึ่งนับเป็นเวลาหลายเดือนที่ต้องตรากตรำ อดหลับอดนอน, การระดมความคิด การโต้แย้งที่ดูเหมือนไม่มีที่สิ้นสุด และการจัดสรร แบ่งเวลาระหว่างการทำงานกับงานนี้

ในวันที่ 9 เมษายน 2552 พวกเราทีมงานโกลด์พลัสได้นำเสนอแผนธุรกิจในรอบรองชนะเลิศ ซึ่งในสายนี้ มีทีมผู้เข้าแข่งขันจาก University of Texas at Austin, Purdue University และ Hong Kong University of Science and Technology แต่จะมีเพียงทีมเดียวเท่านั้นที่จะได้ผ่านเข้าไปสู่รอบชิงชนะเลิศ ในวันนั้นพวกเราสามารถแสดงให้เหล่าคณะกรรมการเห็นถึง ความพร้อมและศักยภาพในเชิงธุรกิจ อาจกล่าวได้ว่าไม่มีอะไรเป็นข้อพิสูจน์ความสำเร็จที่ดีไปกว่าการที่ชื่อของทีมโกลด์พลัส เป็นหนึ่งในทีมที่ได้รับการประกาศ ในงานประกาศผลผู้เข้ารอบสุดท้ายในเย็นวันนั้น

เพื่อที่จะลดความเครียด ความกดดันจากการแข่งขัน อีกทั้งยังเป็นธรรมเนียมของการแข่งขัน NVC ในหลายปีที่ผ่านมา ทางมหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์จะเป็นเจ้าภาพหลักในการจัดงาน Thai Night ซึ่งเป็นการเลี้ยงสังสรรค์ที่จัดขึ้นให้กับทีมผู้เข้าแข่งขันอันเป็นโอกาสอันดีที่จะพบปะ สังสรรค์ แลกเปลี่ยนความคิดและวัฒนธรรม หลังจากงานเลี้ยง คืนนั้นพวกเรานอนหลับอย่างผ่อนคลายเพื่อวันสำคัญในวันรุ่งขึ้น

นับได้ว่าไม่มีประสบการณ์ใดเทียบได้กับการแข่งขันในรอบชิงชนะเลิศ พวกเราต้องแข่งขันกับผู้เข้าแข่งขันอีกสี่ทีมที่มาจากโรงเรียนธุรกิจที่ดีที่สุด ต่อหน้านักธุรกิจ นักลงทุนชั้นนำ ในวงการธุรกิจมูลค่าหลายพันล้าน ในวันนั้น พวกเราทำหน้าที่อย่างเต็มความสามารถและดีที่สุด

ผลการแข่งขันดังนี้ ผู้ชนะเลิศจาก Brigham Young University รองอันดับหนึ่ง Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University รองชนะเลิศอันดับสอง University of California, Berkeley และรองอันดับสาม MIM Thammasat University และ Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration

จากการทำความรู้จักผู้มีประสบการณ์มากมายหลายท่าน (ตั้งแต่อาจารย์ นักวิทยาศาสตร์ โรงงานผู้ผลิตเครื่องประดับ รวมไปถึงนักออกแบบ และผู้เกี่ยวข้องในด้านต่างๆ) การติดต่อประสานงานผ่านทางอีเมลกว่าพันฉบับ กาแฟนับร้อยแก้ว จนถึงชั่วโมงการทำงานที่นับไม่ถ้วน ทีมโกลด์พลัสได้ก้าวมาไกลกว่าที่หลายๆคนคาดคิดไว้ สิ่งที่พวกเราได้รับมากมาย ไม่ใช่เพียงแค่โล่ห์เกียรติยศหรือเงินรางวัล แต่หากเป็นประสบการณ์ ความรู้ ความสามารถ และกำลังใจอันยิ่งใหญ่ที่จะคงอยู่กับเราตลอดไป
